Zomato’s Food Rescue initiative is saving 75% of eligible orders, which translates to over 150,000 meals per month, its CEO Deepinder Goyal said on Wednesday.

The Food Rescue feature was launched on November 10, 2024, to reduce food wastage. The feature allows customers to purchase cancelled orders at discounted prices. The option to claim is available within the range of a 3 km radius of the delivery agent and only for a few minutes.

In an X post, the CEO, resharing a November post, gave an update on the Food Rescue initiative. “Update on Food Rescue. Customers are now rescuing 75% of eligible orders and this number is steadily increasing. At the current rate, we are saving over 150,000 meals in a month,” he wrote.

He added the orders were being claimed within two minutes and delivered in less than nine minutes. “We’re truly grateful for the customer love this feature is receiving. On average, these orders are claimed within 2 minutes and delivered in under 9 minutes,” he added.

Announcing the initiative in November, Goyal said the idea behind ‘Food Rescue’ was to tackle the massive food wastage issue, with over 400,000 orders being cancelled on Zomato every month. These cancelled orders would pop up on the app for nearby users, allowing them to grab them at discounted rates.

He also mentioned that the orders would be delivered in their original, untampered packaging and customers would receive them in minutes. Goyal said that restaurant partners would also receive compensation for the original cancelled order as well as a portion of the amount paid by the new customer. Delivery partners would also be fully compensated for the entire trip, he had said.

“Food Rescue will show up on your home page automatically if there’s a cancelled order available for you to grab. refresh the home page to check for any newly available orders which need to be rescued,” he had said in his post in November.
