On World Tourism Day, the Ministry of Tourism released key statistics around foreign tourists visiting India for the January to June period. And there are some interesting facts about how trends are changing and what foreign tourists are experiencing in India. While forex earnings stood at a whopping $15.33 billion, 46% of the foreign tourists visited India for leisure and recreation. No 1. Foreign Tourist arrivals | A total of 47,78,374 Foreign Tourist Arrivals (FTAs) were recorded between January and June 2024. This was 9.1% higher compared to the same period last year. Yet, this was 9.8 per cent lower than the total FTAs recorded in the January-June, 2019 period. (Image: Reuters)

No 2. Most arrivals from Bangladesh | At 21.55%, Bangladesh was the biggest source of Foreign Tourist Arrivals in the first six months of 2024. The United States (17.56 per cent) and the United Kingdom (9.82 per cent) were the second and third biggest source of FTAs. (Image: Reuters)

No 3. Purpose of visit | A little over 46% of the foreign tourists visited India for leisure and recreation. Indian diaspora constituted over 25% of the FTAs between January and June 2024. Over 18 per cent of the foreign tourists visited India for business and medical purposes. (Image: Reuters)

No 4. Entry point in India | Delhi remained the top entry point for foreign tourists, capturing 31.45% of the share. The national capital was followed by Mumbai at 14.83 per cent, Haridaspur (9.39%), Chennai (8.35%), and Bengaluru (6.45%). (Image: PTI)

No 5. Where do Bangladeshis enter India from | Haridaspur in West Bengal is close to the Bangladesh border. Due to its inland port, Haridaspur has been the preferred entry point for Bangladeshi tourists for over a decade now.

No 6. Forex earnings | Tourism is a major source of foreign exchange earnings for India. Forex earnings in the January- June period stood at $ 15.339 billion. This was 17.62 per cent higher compared to the same period in 2023. But the latest figure was a mere 5.54 per cent higher compared to $14.534 billion earned in the first half of 2019. No 7. How many Indians travelled abroad | Over 15 million Indian nationals visited foreign countries in the first half of 2024, compared to over 13.2 million in January- June, 2023. (Image: Tourism Dubai)

No 8. Where did Indians depart from | Delhi was the biggest port of departure for Indian nationals, accounting for 24.35 per cent of the traffic. Mumbai was second in the list with 20.09 per cent of the departures. Kochi, Chennai and Hyderabad occupied the remaining three spots.
