Voting for the 2024 Haryana Assembly election started at 7 am on Saturday and continued till 6 pm. The state recorded a total voter turnout of 61%, as per the data shared by the Election Commission.

This time, 20,629 polling booths were established for elections in the state, while more than two crore people were eligible to vote. Among these were 8,821 centurions.

The poll campaigning came to an end on Thursday.

Major parties

Among the major political parties in the fray are the ruling BJP, Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the alliance of INLD and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) as well as the JJP along with the Azad Samaj Party.

The saffron party is contesting 89 of the 90 seats in the state. Its Sirsa candidate Rohtash Jangra withdrew his nomination, indicating he may extend support to Haryana Lokhit Party chief Gopal Kanda.

The BJP is eyeing a third consecutive term in Haryana, focusing on the major achievements of its “double-engine” government in the state and at the Centre.

Congress, meanwhile, has also fielded its candidates on the same number of seats, leaving the Bhiwani Assembly constituency for CPI(M). The grand old party was earlier in talks with AAP for a pre-poll alliance, but they decided to go solo after the discussions over seat-sharing remained inconclusive.

Key candidates

As many as 1,031 candidates tried their luck in the 90 Assembly constituencies in Haryana. These include 930 men and 101 women.

Among the major contenders in the fray are Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, former CM Bhupinder Singh Hooda, Olympic wrestler-turned-politician Vinesh Phogat, former deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala and Savitri Jindal, who is competing as an Independent candidate.

What happened in 2019?

During the last Assembly elections in Haryana in 2019, the BJP secured 40 of the 90 seats in the state. It went on to form a government in coalition with the JJP, which had 10 seats.

Congress managed to win 31 seats, while the remaining seats were shared by INLD, Haryana Lokhit Party and Independent candidates.

The counting of votes for the 2024 Haryana Assembly election will take place on Tuesday, October 8.
