The Narendra Modi administration has named T V Somanathan, a 1987-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer, as the new Cabinet Secretary for a two-year term. On Saturday, the Union Cabinet’s Appointments Committee announced Somanathan’s appointment, effective from August 30. He succeeds Rajiv Gauba, a 1982-batch IAS officer, who served a five-year term in the position.

“The Appointments Committee of Cabinet has also approved the appointment of Shri TV Somanathan, IAS (TN:87), as Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat from the date he joins until he officially assumes the role of Cabinet Secretary,” the statement indicated.

Currently, Somanathan serves as the Finance Secretary of India and will carry out the responsibilities of Officer on Special Duty in the Cabinet Secretariat until he takes over as Cabinet Secretary. He will be replacing Rajiv Gauba, who has held the position since August 30, 2019.
